Baptist Student Fellowship
UNIBEN/UBTH

Introduction

The Baptist Student Fellowship (BSF) of the University of Benin/University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UNIBEN/UBTH) is fondly called “The Family of Love”. BSF work in the Nigerian Baptist Convention started in 1958 with the arrival of Miss. Mary Frank Kirk-Patrick from the Southern American Baptist Convention. BSF is an organ of the Convention through the Student ministries to reach all students for Christ.

Motto: “By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another” (John 13:35)..

Objectives: BSF has five cardinal objectives:

  • To lead students to commitment to accept Jesus Christ as Saviour
    and Lord.
  • To involve them in the study of biblical truth and Christian discipleship.
  • To lead them to relate academic disciplines to their Christian faith.
  • To involve them in responsible church membership; denominational
    understanding, and participation.
  • To involve them in the study and practical participation in mission for kingdom expansion

History

The history of the origin and the early metamorphosis of BSF in the University of Benin/UBTH seem to have been lost to antiquity. Apart from the certificate of inauguration that dates back to 1972, the post-inauguration information of the BSF during her first 13 years of existence appears to have been completely lost in transit. Most probably, the BSF of UNIBEN is as old as the institution itself which was founded in 1970.This assertion hinges on the fact that most BSFs were not inaugurated until about a year later with an appreciable evidence of growth. Thus, this brief history is basically what my eyes saw, what my ears heard, what my hands touched and what my soul experienced with effect from late 1985.

The BSF officers in 1985/86 session included:

  • Bro. Egra O. Akpofure (President)
  • Bro. Francis Tom Omo-fregene (Secretary)
  • Bro. Henry Mogbolu (Bible Study Leader)
  • Sis. Bola Adeniyi (Treasurer/Mama), etc.

Dr. M. Thomaston, a white missionary pharmacist, was the BSF Volunteer Campus Minister (VCM) who spoon fed the Fellowship. He would organize Christmas party, etc in his residence at Ekosodin for the BSF members. He abruptly left the country a year or two later due to the health challenge of his wife.

The BSF venue was UNIBEN Lecture Theatre 218 Basement. The obscurity of BSF then was such that one could hardly find any student who knew about BSF or what the three-letter word, BSF, stood for. In fact, it took me almost a whole semester to locate the Fellowship, having stumbled into other Fellowships like Deeper Life, etc.

By 1986/87 session, the Fellowship had grown numerically and
spiritually that the venue was changed to 218 LTII. The officers that session included:

  • Bro. Francis Tom Omofregene (President)
  • Bro. Moses Ogbeni (VP/Programme Leader)
  • Bro. Augustine ANgoziOkoronkwo (Bible Study)
  • Sis.Justina Iretor (Treasurer/Mamal
  • Bro. Friday Ojiebun (Publicity Secretary), etc.

The only archaic wooden signboard was replaced by eight bigger wooden and two metal boards across the campus and UBTH hostel by the Publicity Chairman. The sendforth ceremony of May 24, 1986 was unique and memorable. Much tears of love flowed.

The 1987/88 session executive committee members were:

  • Bro. Egra O. Akpofure (President)
  • Bro. Francis Tom Omo-fregene (Secretary)
  • Bro. Henry Mogbolu (Bible Study Leader)
  • Sis. Bola Adeniyi (Treasurer/Mama), etc.
  • Bro. Friday Ojiebun (Publicity Secretary), etc.

There was a significant innovation in the documentation of activities with hard cover notebooks for minutes, Fellowship Directory, etc. During this period, all fellowship activities were prohibited in class rooms by the University authority. “But the more they afflicted them, the more they multiplied and grew” (Exodus 1:12). BSF grew in leaps and bands. BSF venue was moved to the Sports Complex with an average attendance of 120 on Tuesday Bible study meetings. Efforts were geared toward getting a BSF bus as we embarked on fund drive within and outside the state.

The Fellowship was blessed with the following officers in 1988/89 session:

  • Bro. Augustine NgoziOkoronkwo (President)
  • Bro. Friday Ojiebun (Vice President)
  • Bro. Richard Akinlade (Prayer)
  • Sis. IyobosaAgbonifo (Treasurer), etc

The election into 1989/90 session under the chairmanship of Bro. EseUwanogho had a serious hitch whose effects manifested later. Shortly after Bro. Friday Ojiebun was elected as the President, he declined on his firm conviction: “Arise…and flee into Egypt, and be there until I bring thee word: for Herod will seek… to destroy him” (Matt 2:13). The handwriting on the wall was so frightening that he applied for a temporary exemption from the University. Thus, Bro Richard Akinlade became the President. He served in that capacity for two consecutive years. Between 1990 and 1991, much water passed under the bridge under the presidency of Bro. Richard Akinlade through negligence and Satanic attack. There were allegations of a purported plan to change the name of the fellowship, financial mismanagement etc. An aggrieved faction moved to openly disorganize the Fellowship in spite of all persuasion. The faction leader, who has long gone to rest, threatened for a public show down.

In a swift bid to prevent the inevitable and forestall breakdown in law and order, the executive dialogued with the group and opted for the dissolution of the executive when all efforts failed. The then visitation chairman, Bro. Friday Ojiebun, and Bro. Clement Eruke were immediately appointed as interim President and interim Secretary respectively, pending the election of a new executive. Still unsatisfied with the dissolution of the former executive, the enraged faction leader came into the prayer cycle earlier planned to ask God for the way forward and threw the Fellowship into commotion at the Sports Complex open field.

Shortly after the above, a team from the mother church, Covenant Life (formerly Ugbowo) Baptist Church Benin City, lead by her Pastor, Rev. O. A. Sojobi, came one night to the prayer meeting at the Sports Complex and disbanded the Fellowship. This baptism by fire almost annihilated the Fellowship. Many aggrieved members left for other Fellowships. Of particular pain was the dilemma of a new Muslim convert, Miriam. Some of the members who saw the former glory sobbed and wept over the situation of the Fellowship and approached the mother Church. After a round table discussion with the church executive, Bro. Emmanuel Nwose was appointed at that meeting as the interim BSF leader (“Coordinator”) while Bro. Friday Ojiebun chaired the election for a substantive executive.

The successive executive committees were as follows:

All the above leaders and their cabinets contributed in no small measure to the growth, development and stability of the BSF as we see it today. Their rewards will not elude them in life and eternity.

The 25th (Silver Jubilee), 30thand 40th anniversaries of the Fellowship were held on May 20-25 1997 at Akin Deco Hall (UNIBEN); November 30, 2002 at UBTH VIP lodge and September28 – 30, 2012 at Akin Deco Hall respectively. A good number of the alumni graced the three occasions. The aged dream of the BSF was actualized as they dedicated an 18-seater bus on October 19, 2003 during the tenure of Bro. Jonathan Ekperusi (now a Barrister).

UNIBEN BSF and Her Mother Church, Covenant Life Baptist Church, Benin City

The University of Benin/UBTH BSF has enjoyed the love, fellowship, relationship and cooperation of Covenant Life Baptist Church over the years. The Student (BSF) Sunday was always observed at the Church with BSF members officiatingthose Sundays. The Church bus was on the road conveying students to the Church to and frothe campus in the late 1980s. The BSF members were involved in the Church programmes and worship outlets such as the Sunday School, Ushering, Choir, Bible study, Children department, Village outreaches, etc. The first cassette produced by the Church in the 1980s was done by the Church Choir whose members were majorly UNIBEN BSF members. The BSF students manned the village Churches at Orion (now Efosa), Iwu, etc, spending their weekends in these villages. During the long vacation,BSF members who were leaders in these village churches were assisted by the Mother Church with transportation and holiday feeding allowance.

However, this cordial relationship between the BSF and her Mother church has long been a thing of the past, much water having passed under the bridge. Those that saw the former glory yearn for the restoration! O Lord, let the latter glory surpass the former!

The BSF of UNIBEN/UBTH has always been blessed through the fellowship and assistance of her patrons, matrons and staff advisers. The Staff adviser/VCM (Volunteer Campus Minister) in the later 1980 was Dr. Thompson, a lecturer in the Pharmacy Department. Prof. Akin Odebunmi was a patron the older generations of BSF will never forget in a hurry. Some of the other Support Personnel that have been of immense contribution over the years include:
